WHY IS HISTORIC PRESERVATION IMPORTANT IN LANCASTER?

Historic preservation is not just about preserving individual buildings, but strengthening the essence and character of places that are unique to Lancaster.  Through the designation of Local Landmarks and Historic Districts, the Lancaster Historic Preservation Commission is seeking to promote the history of Lancaster in a manner that stimulates local pride and creates a community that is attractive to residents and visitors, as well as investors and new businesses.  Historic preservation translates into economic development for the community, through reinvestments in the local economy.

HISTORIC RESOURCES HAVE BEEN FOUND TO:

  • Increase neighborhood stability and property values.

  • Preserve the physical history of the area.

  • Promote an appreciation of the physical environment.

  • Foster community pride and self-image by creating a unique sense of place and local identity.

  • Increase the awareness and appreciation of local history.

  • Increase local tourism.

  • Attract potential customers to businesses.

Besides our local historic district, the Village of Lancaster has 2 National Historic Districts as well as several National Historic Landmark Properties and Local Historic Landmark Properties.
